| Bio/Admin History | John Desmond Peter was born in South Africa. He studied law and English literature at Oxford and later at Rhodes University and the University of South Africa, obtaining his Ph.D. from Rhodes. He published his doctoral thesis as "Complaint and Satire in Early English Literature". Peter came to Canada in 1950 and for 11 years taught English at the University of Manitoba. He joined the Victoria College Department of English in 1961 and played an active role in the expansion of that department at the University of Victoria. Among his many activities, he co-founded, with Robin Skelton, "The Malahat Review". Peter published three novels, "Along That Coast" (1964), which won the Doubleday Canadian Novel Prize, "Take Hands at Winter" (1967), and "Runaway" (1969), as well as collection of short stories. |
| Scope and Content | The fonds consists of records relating to Peter's teaching and research activities, including research grant applications, letters of recommendation and lists of bibliographic citations; notes, outlines, fragments, notebooks, manuscripts and galleys for "Along That Coast", "Take Hands at Winter" and "Runaway", as well as unpublished novels by Peter and correspondence with publishers regarding "Along That Coast" and "Runaway". |
