2009 Diversity Writing Contest

The UVic Libraries and the Adviser to the Provost on Equity and Diversity are proud to present the 2009 Diversity Writing Contest. 

What does diversity mean to you? 

Prizes will be awarded to three categories:  fiction, essay/rant, and poetry. 

Judging will be based on style, originality, clarity, and adherence to the theme of diversity as it relates to

gender, sexuality, age, race, ability, ethnicity, or culture.

Contest Guidelines:

  • Only one entry per student
  • Content previously published, accepted, or submitted for publication elsewhere is not permitted
  • Entries may take the form of short fiction, short non-fiction, or a poem
  • Maximum length of fiction and non-fiction entries 1500 words (not including citations)
  • Maximum length for poetry is two double-spaced pages
  • Entries should focus on the topic of diversity
  • Winning entries will be published online and in Multiplicity
  • All entries must be submitted by 4:30 pm on November 16th 2009
  • Judges will assess the submissions for style, originality, clarity, and adherence to the theme of diversity
  • Contest is open to all students at UVic, but not to staff or faculty
  • Entries failing to comply with the above rules/regulations will not be accepted
  • Entrants will not be notified about judge’s decision even if SASE is provided
  • Only winners and finalists will be notified by email

First- and second-place finalists from each category will receive cash prizes.  First-place finalists will also receive one-year subscriptions to the Malahat Review.  Third-place finalists will get a variety of UVic swag.  All finalists will have their entries published online and in Multiplicity.  Submissions will be judged on originality, style, and adherence to the theme of diversity.

Prizes are possible through the generous support of our sponsors: the UVic Libraries, the adviser to the provost on equity and diversity, Student Affairs, the Department of Graduate Studies, the UVic Bookstore, Athletics & Recreation, and Conference, Food & Housing Services.

To enter, send an email to libtrain@uvic.ca.  In the body of the email, include your name, contact information, student number, submission category (fiction, non-fiction, or poetry), and total word count.  Attach your submission in “.doc”, “.docx”, or “.txt” format.  Do not include your name, student number, or any personal identifier in the attached submission.
